Raising the boredom threshold
Tim explained his decision to not buy a minivan with DVD player:
Very true. So many of us worship "excitement" that we cannot tolerate a single bit of boredom. This is not good for our spirituality at all.

I think if we make a habit of stuffing our lives with things that don't satisfy, prayer or other real mental and spiritual food would seem boring. I would like to commit to helping my kids raise their "boredom threshold" -- so that they won't feel bored for the wrong reasons, but they'll feel bored only if it's legitimate.

I agree about "feel bored only if it's legitimate". I was talking to a kid who plays his DS all the time - during dinner, while walking, while on the bus - and it confused me.
I looked at my own youth - we still had our Game Boys, but we made time for other things as well. Game Boy, to a point, was boring to us. We still used our time to play tag, build models, draw and publish xerox comics, do origami...

the point is, why is boredom considered a bad thing and should be eliminated at all cost? We must learn to live with and appreciate the boredom in our life...
