My Paper

Worship discipleship is not a popularized idea, even though in their separate context, worship and discipleship are both ubiquitous topics in Christian training. Strangely, the two concepts are rarely considered together. Yet worship discipleship can potentially play a critical role in the development of the church in the postmodern era, and a practical theology of worship discipleship is desperately needed for the new generation of evangelical Christian.

This research paper intends to establish the historical and biblical foundations of worship discipleship, and briefly explores their contemporary implications to the execution of the ministry in the postmodern church.

This is the introduction to my 62 pages, 16,788 words paper that I just handed in 20 minutes ago. After 4 months of reading, researching and head-strectching and it is finally done.

Besides realizing that my paper writing skill has deteriorated very much since my last credit course at Regent in 2005, I also realize that writing paper at this length requires a level of planning that I've never experienced. I regret that I under-estimated the planning required for this project, which made my writing process unneccessarily frustrating.

I will be better prepared next time. The topic for my course is "the Biblical Foundations and Historical Development of Christian Worship", and the topic of my paper is "Worship Discipleship in the Ancient Church". My next course, starting in June this year, will be "Sunday Worship; Music and the Arts".

Looking forward.

Rest in Peace

E-mail from Dr. James Hart, Provost of Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies:

Bob Webber died today at 6:10 PM in Joanne's arms. A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Friday, June 15 at 7 PM. Please keep Joanne and the family in your prayers.

"Depart, O Christian soul, out of this world; in the name of God the Father Almighty who created you; in the name of Jesus Christ who redeemed you; in the name of the Holy Spirit who sanctifies you. May your rest be this day in peace, and your dwelling place in the Paradise of God. Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant Bob. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen."

We love you, Bob. Go in the peace and joy of the Lord.

Facebook and Virginia Tech: A New Normal

This is an interesting article about the new dynamics of the Web 2.0 space and "journalism" (a word needing redefinition).

Who wants a perfect church?

Insights from bible study tonight:

We tend to settle for a less-than-perfect church that can accommodate our less-than-perfection.

If you're like this, don't have unrealistic expectation on others.
If you're not, strive for perfecting yourself in Christ first.

Doing Business the Jesus Way?

I was in the office building today and the person who owns the suite told me how his friends were telling him to never sell that space as according to Feng Shui guidelines that space location is suppose to provide a lot of good luck and fortune to its tenants.

This was interesting as I think for a lot of people many of their business practices and directions are based on one’s personal beliefs. I think there is nothing wrong with that as people essentially project their values and beliefs through their work or business everyday I’d say.

Yeah. Why do they feel so strange when we tell people we do business according to the Bible's teaching?

This is probably the first mainline Hollywood movie with content related to homosexual marriage. And worse, it is a comedy. When you can make fun of it, it means people have accepted it as the social norm.

Disaster

I accidentally deleted all the speaking engagements from my calendar (Yes, I know this is stupid. Stop laughing now. Show some compassion). I tried to retrieve all the appointments from different means (including my non-reliable memory), but I am not sure if I have got them all. So if you have invited me to speak at your church / fellowship, you better give me an e-mail to make sure that I have you marked down. I am so frustrated because this is so not professional.

I cannot imagine what will happen if my laptop got stolen...

Robert Webber

From the sharing letter of Robert Webber, theologian, who has suffered from cancer for the last 7 months.

Dear prayer partners,

From a human perspective, I feel that the end is drawing near for me. Yet, I still believe that God can work a Divine intervention and/or give me and Joanne the "peace that passes all understanding." Please pray that I won't linger in an unconscious state.

I also ask that you pray for peace for my wife, children and grandchildren.

You are all in my heart and my thanks to each of you for your faithfulness in prayers. We have felt them!

Peace and the Lord be with you,

Bob

Tony Campolo

Uncle Benny introduced me to this video (and thanks Josh for leading me to the YouTube version) - Interview of Tony Campolo on CBC's The Hour.

Try going to the CBC page and read the viewers response. I am amazed by how positive even the non-Christian viewers respond to Tony Campolo.

Glad to see you had Tony Campolo on. One of the few Christian voices I can stomach. On another theological note - the existence of Il Divo proves there is a hell.

We definitely need a new rhetoric.

Church shopaholics

What is wrong with me looking to go to another [church]?

What's wrong is this: I'm running away, I'm refusing to reconcile my differences. I’m looking for what the church can do for me and not what I can do for it. I want it easy, comfortable. I admit that’s a little hard to swallow ... but that’s how it is. I need to think about taking up my cross, not leaving it for the next person to pick up.

Now, where do I go from here?

Hmmmm, well I guess I need to work out what I have trouble with at the old church and how to move forward with those issues whether I can afford to return there or not.

Consumerism is the number one enemy (or the tool of our number one Enemy) of the church today. Attack!

7 Habits of Highly Effective Junior Designers

  1. Work quickly. Produce a lot.
  2. Attend to details.
  3. Be versatile.
  4. Make an effort to learn.
  5. Anticipate problems.
  6. Set goals.
  7. Display a positive attitude.

As a supervisor to designers (and once a junior designer), I find these very true.
And notice that it has nothing to do with talent. Yes, nothing to do with talent.

Talent Isn’t Everything

The Collect for Holy Saturday

O God, Creator of heaven and earth: Grant that, as the crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb and rested on this holy Sabbath, so we may await with him the coming of the third day, and rise with him to newness of life; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

講故事

Reading 袁建滔's blog posts about his son gives me comfort. It confirms me that I am not the only dad of this kind. I feel less guilty.

The Next Station is Lai Chi Kok。

The Next Station is Jordan……

On A1

As a preacher, this is probably a reminder that we need to post in front of our desk. Do not fail the mission of delivering God's word with quality.

But as one in the congregation, I understand the burden of the preacher. It is difficult to maintain a high level of quality when you preach every week. Have compassion on your pastors. They will have down time and they need encouragement too.

Afterall, we are listening to the word of God, not listening to the preacher preaching. The food from exotic restaurant is great, but it is the plain family meals by your mom that nurture you day after day after day. Learn to appreciate your simple daily bread.

阿中quoted in his blog from slashdot:

Despite claims made by GlaxoSmithKline that their Ribena soft drinks are high in Vitamin C, two New Zealand high school students found in their science fair research project that at least some formulations of the drink contained no detectable levels of the vitamin.
